Home again and back to Earth (N.E.C Rocks!)
After an absence of just over a week (problems with my lap-top) we are back from Motor Heaven and into the Driving Seat. Ten counties plus in a week is fairly tiring but the end of our trip saw us spending two nights in Birmingham or Solihull to be more precise and a full day at the Classic Motor Show.
You would certainly need the full three days of the event at the N.E.C to cover all the stands and exhibits. It is well worth the effort for any Driver (learner or otherwise) who has the slightest interest in Classic, Historic or Sports Cars.
Our friends Ian and Cindy are members of the Sporting Bears Motor Club which provides one of the Highlights of the three day event. The Dream Rides package gives the general public a chance to experience what it is like in a Ferrari, a Porsche, a Morgan or the historic Ford GT40 and many other classic sports cars, for a twenty minute spin on the open road which will be a memory to hold forever. All money raised goes to children’s Charities.
My latest pupil and youngest Daughter Aoife, spent a hectic 3 hours at the Registration Table with Cindy; booking and organising the flood of excited Dream-Riders. You couldn’t get near the queue. At the end of the day and before night fell, the two of us had our own ride in an open-top Daimler 250 V8, complete with hair billowing in the Wind and Panic rail perspiration. A great end to a memorable day.
Ah but what about the Porsche 911? Well we both experienced the thrill of the 3.2 litre engine and the road holding capabilities of arguably one of the most successful cars ever to come out of Germany, to and from the Exhibition. Forty five years after partnering each other at Left wing and Inside left on the Hockey pitch, it was good to be side by side again in one of the greatest Classic cars ever built. Perhaps if I behave myself I might get to drive the Beast next visit? Actually now I come to think of it this car matches Ian’s speed on the wing very well and as for myself, my penchant for nippy smaller cars during my driving career is quite well served by the Multi function Polo TD1 which we have used successfully for four years now.
More about the trip and Driving conditions in the U.K tomorrow.
