K.I.S.S and make up.
Every one over the age of consent should have heard of the K.I.S.S. formula. Keep it simple stupid. It’s a useful philosophy in life especially for creative types I think. If your brain is going at 18,000 revolutions a minute rather like Schumacher at Monza, or Raikonnen at Spa -Francorchamps then things are likely to go a little off-course rather rapidement.
What I am talking about is the need to be relaxed and calm in your Driving style. This clearly comes with experience and confidence but can be learnt if you have a mind to, from the first time you sit in the Driving Seat, with that first Provisional License still in its shiny plastic envelope.
Learning the correct skills for handling a car from a professional is not a wimp’s choice but absolutely the way to go if you are going to stay safe, avoid accidents, particularly other driver’s mistakes.
Most accidents where two or more cars collide occur when one driver makes a mistake and the other(s) is just not concentrating enough and gets sucked into the mess!
The most common fault we see in Drivers of all ages is that of driving too close to the vehicle ahead and stopping too close, not giving enough time and space to react and dissipate the situation. Make no mistake …you Will be rear-ended and sometimes often in your Driving career. There is not a lot you can do to avoid this but you CAN avoid damaging the front of your car by stopping a suitable distance from the car ahead and of course using the handbrake.
Both these two simple techniques will prevent your engine and radiator from damage if you are unfortunate enough to be clouted up the rear end.
Don’t believe it can happen to you? We have been rear ended three times in the last two years. Once having stopped in a row of cars at traffic lights; once stopped at the foot of a steep hill and once stopped waiting to enter a roundabout.
The three Drivers in question were,in order, Male 22, with agitated female co-driver; Female 48 sole occupant; Male 53, sole occupant with brand new car.
The latter incident just a few months ago in a pupils’ car gave us both a very hefty pain in the neck for a few hours and illustrated what can be possible in a serious clout from behind.
Reasons for these collisions? Driving without taking sufficient notice of what is going on around. In all these cases we had been stopped for six or seven seconds before the impact illustrating the need to Keep your Distance; as well as staying alert.
