Get the Point and Arrive Alive…….
Up to now we have been concentrating on Driving Skills or rather the lack of them in our blog posts and articles. Today we will look at the problem of Drinking and Driving which still doesn’t receive enough attention and which causes untold misery and costs the country Millions of Euro every year.
Some interesting statistics just released for the U.K. state that one quarter of all drivers killed in Road Accidents last year were over the legal limit. This figure is the highest for twenty years and once again the age group most likely to fit into this statistic are the males from 17 to 19 years of age.
While the level of fatalities fell last year to its lowest ever at 3,221 the Drink Driving figures have been rising steadily for the last seven years. Britain, Ireland, Malta, and Luxembourg are the only Countries in Europe still clinging to the 80.mg. of alcohol per 100ml.of blood.
The lessons to be learnt from this are obvious….if we want to be serious about reducing the death toll on the roads we should bring in a lower limit of alcohol tolerance and put the infrastructure in place to both police it and enforce it.
The A and E departments in Hospitals are overflowing with road accident victims at weekends making it difficult for other patients to be dealt with speedily. A friend recently was told to go away and come back during the week since this particular department was overrun with crash casualties. He had been recovering from a serious operation.
To finish up with my favourite desert we will continue to pay the price of the total failure of the various agencies and the Department of Transport to implement proper training and testing legislation for new and young Drivers. The legislation covering the accreditation and check testing of Driving Instructors is also way overdue and is responsible for the continuing appalling standards of new drivers who are not being trained adequately. This lack of training just adds to the increasing number s of drivers failing the Driving Test.
The lengthy waiting list for a Driving Test is going to be with us for a considerable time into the future until the mandatory tuition which is common throughout Europe, is brought in.
